📵 WAELs Cell Phone & Electronic Device Policy

🛑 Please Note

Waverly Academy of Empowered Learners (WAELs) and its staff are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged cell phones, smartwatches (e.g., Apple Watch, V-Tech, Fitbit), portable music players, or entertainment systems. Students who choose to bring these items to school do so at their own risk.

📱 Permitted Devices

  • Students are permitted to bring cell phones to school.
  • Students who ride the NYC school bus with a commute time exceeding 30 minutes may bring portable music and entertainment systems (e.g., iPods, MP3 players, PSP, Nintendo DS) for use only during the bus ride and with the bus driver’s permission.

⛔ Usage Restrictions

Cell phones and electronic devices must remain turned off and stored in student backpacks during the following times:

  • The entire school day (from arrival to dismissal)
  • While waiting for the bus
  • During all after-school programs on school premises

Prohibited Uses:

  • Photography, video, or audio recording without explicit staff permission
  • Use during quizzes, tests, or examinations
  • Use during fire drills or emergency preparedness activities
  • Use in bathrooms, hallways, cafeteria, auditorium, or during recess

📚 Educational Use

Cell phones may only be used during instructional time for educational purposes and with explicit teacher approval.

⚠️ Confiscation and Consequences

For Cell Phones:

  • First Infraction: Device confiscated and sent to the Principal’s office. Parents/guardians notified. Returned to student at end of school day.
  • Second Infraction: Device returned only to parent/guardian at end of school day.
  • Third Infraction: Device returned to parent/guardian, loss of privileges for one month, and possible additional disciplinary actions as per the NYC Discipline Code.

For Other Electronic Devices: The same three-step process applies.

🚌 Special Notes for Long Bus Commutes

Students with bus rides over 30 minutes may use portable music or entertainment devices only on the bus and with driver permission. These devices must remain off and stored in backpacks at all other times. Violations will result in confiscation and consequences as outlined above.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure a safe, focused, and distraction-free learning environment at WAELs. We ask for the support of all families in reinforcing these rules with their children.
